Composition and characteristics of 400 series stainless steel
Source:Xinsteel Date:2020/6/10
Commonly used 400 series stainless steel varieties are 430, 410, 420, 409L, etc., of which 430 stainless steel is the most used. 430 stainless steel has a chromium content of 18%, which is characterized by its low price, low coefficient of thermal expansion, and resistance to chloride stress corrosion. It is superior to 300 series stainless steel varieties; but its deficiencies are also relatively obvious: formability, weldability, and tensile strength Less than 300 series stainless steel models, so it limits its scope of use. The chromium content of 410 and 420 stainless steels is 13%. Their main feature is their high hardness.
Under the same chromium content, 400 series stainless steel has the same corrosion resistance as 300 series stainless steel and better than 200 series stainless steel in oxidizing media such as atmosphere, fresh water and nitric acid. Adding trace niobium, titanium, copper, aluminum and other elements can improve its deep drawing performance, weldability, corrosion resistance and high temperature strength, and can partially replace 300 series stainless steel.
At present, 400 series stainless steel is widely used in automotive exhaust pipes, elevators, washing machine inner cylinders, kitchen utensils, home appliances, medical equipment, water heaters, roof panels, curtain walls and power plant equipment.
